16–17 vs 18+: Choosing the Right Setting

GUIDANCE FOR REFERRERS

Go Ahead Homes operates two distinct frameworks, and getting the referral into the right one from the start avoids delays later.

16–17 (Ofsted-registered)

For young people still legally children, registered under the Supported Accommodation (England) Regulations 2023 and inspected against Ofsted’s National Quality Standards. These homes provide a more structured level of support, appropriate for care leavers and young people preparing for adulthood who still need that oversight

18+ (semi-independent)

For young adults who’ve turned 18 and are building toward full independence. Support here is structured around practical skills: budgeting, tenancy management, education, training and employment, rather than the statutory care framework that applies below 18.

Why it matters for referrers

A young person approaching their 18th birthday in a 16–17 setting will usually need a transition plan discussed well in advance. We can advise on timing when you refer. Getting the framework right at the point of referral means the right level of support from day one, rather than a move shortly after placement.
